What does it mean to be a Performer?

We all perform. Job performance, test performance, performance in our relationships, class performance with behavior towards our teachers and fellow students, even when we tell a joke to our friends, that is a performance too. So what makes a Performer different? There are a lot of theories out there. Some say it is the “it factor”, some say it is having a skill like singing, rapping, dancing or acting. Some say it requires talent, some say it requires luck, others say it requires guts. Or maybe, its having a stage, a space, to have your voice heard, and having people there to listen. Well, this past Saturday Miky and Grimez from our One Mic program got that very opportunity to be on a stage, in a real auditorium and perform in front of a large audience. It was at an event with NYU NASHSA, a dance troupe that holds a benefit dance show each year, all proceeds from which go to a different non-profit. This year ART START was the benefactor. But we got more than money. We got to give some of our participants the chance to put what they work on in the One Mic program into practical application by being guest performers during the show. Grimez and Miky stepped up to the plate and delivered a home run! They gave their all to the audience, and the audience gave back with love, support and enthusiasm. Maybe that is what makes a Performer, a give and give partnership between you the Performer, and us the audience, and when done right, both parties not only give, but they get a whole lot too. Well by that definition, on Saturday night, Miky and Grimez, became Performers.
